This page aims to summarise and provide website access to all parties which may contest the 2011 general election in New Zealand to be held on the 26th November 2011. Last updated on the 1st September 2011.
Left
Labour Party - Largest and oldest left wing party in Parliament.
Green Party - Third largest party in Parliament. Environmental focus.
Mana Party - Extreme left and Maori party led by Hone Harawira former Maori Party member. Only just created.
New Zealand First - Not currently represented in Parliament but previously held around 20% of the vote. Conservative and nationalistic party.
Alliance Party - Formerly a rivalling centre left party to Labour. Unlikely to be elected in this election.
New Zealand Democratic Party for Social Credit - Born out of the Social Credit Party the third largest party back in the First Past the Post days this party has been unable to be elected in recent years.
Right
National Party - Largest party in Parliament currently.
ACT Party - Extreme right wing party and ideology based in liberalism however currently two highest ranked members of the party are National politicians so likely to act more conservatively post-election.
Maori Party - Began with left-wing roots but has now established itself as a right wing party. Established in 2004/2005 due to the passing of the Foreshore and Seabed Act by Labour. Focuses on Maori issues.
United Future - Moderate right party, highly conservative socially and has only one MP in Parliament. May not be re-elected to Parliament next term. Unlikely to have more than one MP in future.
Tea Party - New extreme right party ripping off the US Republicans movement. Unlikely to be elected.
Conservative Party - New extreme right party which appears to have a large funding backing. Appears unlikely to be elected.
Libertarianz - An old extreme right party. Unlikely to be elected.
New Citizen Party - A right wing party which also targets itself to Asian and Maori voters. Achieved an impressive result in the Botany by-election and if able to replicate that result across the country could be elected.
The Kiwi Party - An offshoot of the United Future Party. Strongly religious and conservative moderate right wing party. Unlikely to be elected.
Other
Pirate Party - Currently attempting to get enough members to register in time for election.
Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party - A party whose main aim is to legalise Cannabis. Usually attains around 1% of the vote.
